DISCOURSE (ir/nl | FWD: Gher Space)
discourse (Katayoun Arian) is an Iranian-Dutch DJ, curator and writer based in Amsterdam. She is the founder of FWD: Gher Space, an Amsterdam-based platform that aims to be a home for a growing community of womxn and non-binary DJs and artists in particular. The platform strives to connect music loving audiences, dancers, artists with different experiences, cultural backgrounds, and gender identities, to diverse musical traditions, communities, and venues. Growing up in the Netherlands, Katayoun developed a versatile musical interest ranging from techno, classical music from Iran and beyond all the way to funk, smooth jazz, R&B and dancehall. Currently, she is particularly interested in the question of what an archive can do, and therefore also what and archive can be by activating and rearranging aural archives centring on female vocalists from Iran and beyond. Her mixtapes for Red Light Radio entitled ‘Female Vocalists from Iran (and Beyond)’ are arrangements through which she explores but also emphasizes her conviction that the meaning of archival documents changes through the ways they are activated and (re-)arranged.
