Kiwi
London based DJ and producer Kiwi, aka Alex Warren, stepped back into the spotlight in 2017 with the release of his ‘Orca’ EP on Bristol’s Futureboogie imprint. Notably A side ‘Orca’ went on to claim rave reviews by Mixmag and topped the dance charts on Juno and Beatport for 7 weeks. Kiwi followed this up with releases on Dusky’s 17 steps, earning acclaim from the likes of DJ Harvey and Gerd Janson and a vinyl only 12” alongside Joakim on Life and Death. Whilst busy in the studio Kiwi was also busy on the road, touring Asia (twice), North America, a busy festival period, including Glastonbury whilst still holding it down at his residency at XOYO in London and the touring the rest of Europe. Kiwi has earnt a reputation for his long winding all night long DJ sets often genre hopping from Balearic, Disco, House to Detroit-Techno and everything in between.
The story of Alex ‘Kiwi’ Warren has a humble root as an in-house photographer for world famous ‘DURRR’ night, the club started by Erol Alkan’s much celebrated Trash team post end date back in late 2007. As a young art-student at Goldsmiths Alex started Orlando Boom, and sister Disco-night Kate Boss. These sold out parties caught the attention of the Columbo Group, who were launching a new club in Dalston called ‘The Nest.’ Impressed by Alex Warren’s passion for music and success as a one-man promotions company they appointed him booking and promotions manager for The Nest. Since opening in 2013 ‘The Nest’ continually push expectations of a small club with massively ambitious line-up’s fuelled by legendary crowds and their unbridled dance floor antics. All of this should be counted as a testament to Alex ‘Kiwi’ Warren’s relationship with the Night and the Music.
It wasn’t long before Kiwi figured out he had more to offer than his promoter skills and decided to take to the decks, a gamble that paid off immediately. Without a moments hesitation Kiwi went to work making music, during this period Kiwi released ‘The Guanako Haka’ EP on Days of Being Wild, the ‘Dawn’ EP with Ashworth on Sneaky, and ‘Llama’ on Jack Savidge and Edwin Congreave’s much-acclaimed Deep Shit label which went on to be rereleased on Defected. Further output was seen on Needwant, a track on Clouded Vision compilation and the massive ‘The Mara’ release on Duke Dumont’s Blasé Boys Club. Then came the Remixes for Who Made Who, Bonar Bradberry, Few Nolder, Is Tropical, The Klaxons and many more, further extending Kiwi’s reach and earning support from Andrew Weatherall, DJ Harvey, Daniel Avery, Erol Alkan, Optimo, Rob da Bank, Annie Mac and Skream amongst others.
Over the following years Kiwi has refined his sound, releasing the ‘Animals EP’ to much acclaim, with remixes by Horse Meat Disco, Man Power, Brassica and Mark E. He released ‘Cormorant’ on Correspondent, and the much sought after disco cover of Carmens ‘Throwdown’ on Optimo music, which warranted a 10/10 review in DJ Mag. Kiwi is back in 2018 with a string of releases namely his latest Oooh EP on Dusky’s 17 Steps, Pine Marten on Moscoman’s highly acclaimed Disco Halal, plus more to come on the likes of Correspondent, Fort Romeau’s Cin Cin, and Toy Tonic. DJ Mag nominee Kiwi is set to make 2018 his biggest to date.
